Sky/Fox deal faces broadcasting standards probe


The Culture Secretary says she is “minded” to refer the proposed takeover of Sky by 21st Century Fox to the competition regulator for a broadcasting standards investigation.

Karen Bradley told MPs that following almost 43,000 representations to her department on the £18.5bn deal, she was also confirming her intention to ask the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to investigate on media plurality grounds.

She said there was a risk “which is not purely fanciful” that the merger would not be in the public interest.

Fox announced in December last year that it was making a fresh bid to buy the 61% of Sky, the owner of Sky News, that it does not already own.
